Every once in a while, I have an “Oh My God, I’m a nerd!” moment.

For those of you who aren’t up to speed…

Nerd = Intelligent person with special interests who does NOT understand social cues and has communication problems, making it difficult for them to function well in society. Nerds are often so deeply embedded in their interests they don’t know how to have conversations about anything else.

Geek = Intelligent person with special interests who DOES have some social skills and can interact well enough with the larger population of non-nerd, non-geek society.

Some people among the geek communities make fun of the nerds… I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them. I’m in love with one, actually. His social skills aren’t great, and his favorite things to talk about are horror movies and video games. And he has friends who are waaaay nerdier than he is, which is normally a sign of a nerd or a geek. To me, nerds are quite adorable sometimes with their ineptitude.

But I don’t really like to think of myself as one. I like to think of myself as a well-functioning member of society who is capable of moving out of the Dungeon that is My Office and be seen by other employees, and be at least thought of as intelligent and interesting if not liked; therefore, I think of myself as a geek most of the time.

But I saw this bauble, at ThinkGeek, no less:

And went OMGWTFBBQ musthave MUSTHAVE must wear!!!1!!1111!!!!!111!!11 FTW!!!

And then I took a deep breath, and shuddered.

And shuddered again.

I still want the necklace. And I would wear it.

I just have to remember not to take the OMGWTFBBQ along with me.

I managed to track down the artist who makes the necklace. She has lots of other cool pieces. Reasonably priced, too. It always makes me so happy to find people making creative, intelligent jewelry.
